Beauty Sleep – Free Beauty Remedy or A Scientific Myth?

What’s beauty sleep?

As the name suggests, the term beauty sleep stands for sufficient sleep to keep you looking healthy, young and beautiful. To make this magic work an average adult needs to sleep between 7 to 9 hours, depending on the age and health condition.

Despite the recommendations, some of us tend to neglect the importance of pillow time and choose to spend it differently. Let’s look whether sleep-deprived people are truly missing out the free beauty remedy?

Beauty sleep - is it real?

In 2010, Swedish university – Karolinska Institute conducted an experiment, which examined the relationship between sleep and perceptions of attractiveness and health.

23 experiment participants were photographed twice, once - after normal sleep and once - after being deprived of sleep. After, 65 observers graded the images for attractiveness, healthy looks and tiredness. The observers rated that after normal sleep (7-9 hours) the people appeared more attractive, healthy and energetic. Also stating that they would be interested in socialising with them more than with sleep-deprived people.

The explanation behind this is quite logical - facial signals of sleep deprived people affect facial appearance, making them appear fed up and tired.

During sleep, your skin and body go through a restoration process, and besides leaving you looking refreshed and glowing, the regular sleeping routine can even improve medical conditions including eczema, acne or rosacea. Did you know that even great leaders go to sleep before making an important decision? So next time you decide to stay up late, think – it is worth it?!

When to have your beauty sleep?

As much as it’s important getting recommended sleep every day, it’s also crucial to have a regular sleeping schedule.

When it comes to choosing the sleeping time, Indian medicine system recommends following the nature pattern - going to bed with the sun setting and waking up to the sun rising, optimally between 10 pm and 6 am.

Waking up a little before sunrise (before 6 am) will synchronise your energy levels with the sun, hence will make you feel even more energetic throughout the day. Rising early also has practical advantages including it gives you enough time to plan your day, eat breakfast without rushing and preparing for a day.

Remember that sleeping is a very personal thing; so, create a schedule that is suitable for your personal lifestyle.

How can you improve your sleep?

First, optimise your bedroom to assist sleep – ensure it’s quiet, dark and a room has a comfortable temperature (it’s not too cold or hot).

To ensure sun or street lights don’t disturb your sleep, choose blackout blinds. Fit them either on their own or behind an existing curtain to provide an extra layer of light protection. Blackout blinds are holy grails for those who have bedroom windows on a sunny side or facing a busy street. Plus, we offer blackout lining upgrade on all our roman blinds and curtains.

We offer over 240 different blackout blind options, including colourful and patterned blinds. Get inspired with our blackout blinds range on the website or from this Pinterest board.

Shutters are another worthy investment. They will reduce the amount of light and sound coming through your windows and will provide great air control. Read this blog post to learn more about shutters or get inspired with this Pinterest board.

Here’re a few more things to consider if you want to make the most of your sleeping time:

  • Disconnect from the world. Switch off sound & vibration on all your devices to avoid distraction. Because we all know how easy it’s to get trapped into the exciting world of the internet. P.S. Don’t worry, your alarm’s sound will still go off in the morning!

  • Don’t eat or drink shortly before going to bed. Otherwise, you’ll struggle to fall asleep fast because your stomach will be processing the food and liquids consumed. Plus, it saves you from having wee nightmares.

  • Wash your face & remove makeup to unclog your pores and let your skin breath.

  • Use face and body night moisturiser or mask to hydrate your skin, help it recover from daily damage and make it look glowing in the morning.

  • Keep a notebook on your bedside table. It will be your helper in case you need to jot down your to-do lists, genius thoughts or ideas that come to your head as soon as you close your eyes (as they do!). Once they’re on the paper, you can relax your brain and switch off from thinking.

Don’t have enough time to sleep?

We know, we know, you might be thinking - how on earth will I find time to sleep for 7/9 hours a day?! I can do something better with this time.

Hopefully, we managed to convince you that getting enough sleep and sticking to a regular sleeping routine will have a positive impact on your life. That’s why it’s important to prioritise your time and even give up some of the less important activities like watching TV, spending hours scrolling through Facebook feed or staying up late on the phone. If you still aren’t convinced – do a deeper Google research.
